Chapter 8
This time they had no problem crossing the border into Norway. The country was no longer under Danish rule but had entered a union with Sweden. The nominal king was Karl, but the real ruler was the regent, Crown Prince Karl Johan, a Frenchman whose real name was Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. As usual, the people of Norway found themselves ruled by outside forces. Many were bound to wonder why they didn’t have their own king. Was it really necessary to go to Sweden to find one? And then a foreigner at that!
Most ordinary Norwegians didn’t understand much of what went on. They merely kept quiet and accepted things as they were. But Norway had a constitution now. This was a feather in its cap and Eidsvoll, where it had been drawn up, was spoken of with reverence. Though few people understood what was so remarkable about it. Not much information, news or enlightenment reached those living out in the country. But the poor peasant or the beggar on the street corner would console himself with the knowledge that at least they had got rid of the Danes.
Tula looked out of the carriage window. “So this is Norway! Excuse me if I’m being disrespectful but I can’t tell the difference!”
Vinga smiled. “This is Østfold, my dear, and the countryside here is very similar to Sweden. You really ought to see the Norwegian mountains! Have you ever been up in the mountains?”
“No, never. I can hardly remember Graastensholm because I was so young when we were there. Mother and Grandfather Arv speak of the mountains of Norway with fear and respect. They are always thinking of the Valley of the Ice People.”
It would be quite something to go there, she thought, but didn’t dare say that aloud. She had to avoid anything that might arouse their suspicions that she was cursed.
“We should have gone to the Valley of the Ice People,” said Heike, echoing her thoughts. “We need to do something about Tengel the Evil and his buried pot. We can’t go on like this, living in such fear. That business with the flute was a serious jolt!”
“But we’re not the right ones to search for the valley,” said Vinga.
“No,” replied Heike. “I feel sorry for whoever seriously tries to do it.”
Tula was listening attentively to their conversation.
Vinga went on: “Yes, it must be someone with far greater supernatural gifts than everyone else. Do you know what, Heike. I often think that must be you!”
“Me? You should have seen the pathetic figure I cut in Gunilla’s and Erland’s room! All our ancestors had to protect me and Tula. I lay sprawled like a glove on the floor!”
Vinga smiled. “Oh, so it isn’t you after all. I’m pleased about that.”
Might it be me? thought Tula. No, it was impossible. She had been even more helpless than Heike in the face of the threat from Tengel the Evil. She who had been his helpless
